The Royal Economic Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious economic associations in the world. It is a learned society, founded in 1890 to promote the study of economic science. The Society organises many events and activities, including publishing the Economic Journal and the Econometrics Journal and holding the RES Annual Conference, a major international gathering of academic economists.
The RES provides financial and other sources of support to a wide range of economists, including: young economists, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students, and academic economists and their university departments. Support includes the award of grants and prizes and the organisation of events such as the RES Training Schools and the Postgraduate Meeting and Job Market.
The 2012 Annual Conference took place 26 March to 28 March 2012, at the University of Cambridge. The Conference of Heads of University Departments of Economics (CHUDE) was set up by the Royal Economic Society in 1987 in collaboration with the Association of University Teachers of Economics to promote the study and teaching of economics in the United Kingdom. The Conference comprises the Heads of Economics and related departments and units at universities in the United Kingdom.
The Royal Economic Society's Women's Committee was established in May 1996 to promote the role of women in the UK economics profession, with a particular concern for career entrants. Members of the committee are drawn from academia, business and the civil service. The work of the committee includes a biennial investigation into the position of women in economics.
The RES provides financial and other sources of support to assist in the further study of Economics through initiatives such as: the Young Economist of the Year essay competition and the Public Lecture series for school students; the RES Training Schools and the Postgraduate Meeting and Job Market for advanced postgraduate students; and a variety of fellowships, grants, prizes and other resources for postgraduates and other academic researchers and their departments.
